The 1962 Impala didn’t bring notable styling changes, but Chevrolet tweaked the engine lineup to include more powerful choices. The base engine was still the 235 six-cylinder with 135 horsepower, but only people interested in a fancy ride to the supermarket ordered it. The 283 2-barrel was the base V8 choice, developing 170 horsepower.
The GM brand dropped the more powerful 283 versions, making room for an all-new 327 with two horsepower ratings. The standard choice was the 250-horsepower unit, while the upgraded sibling developed 300 horsepower. Chevrolet also dropped the legendary 348, so this year’s big-block engine was the 409, available with 380 and 409 horsepower. The latter sported a dual four-barrel carburetor.
