As cool as Ice: Val Kilmer’s 1969 Pontiac GTO

A 1969 Pontiac GTO convertible once owned by Hollywood legend and the one and only ‘Iceman’, Val Kilmer, is for sale by auction at the Mecum ‘Car Week’ sales event in Monterey, California, on 12-14 August 2021.

The black-over-white muscle car has received extensive restoration and modernisation, with air suspension and four-wheel disc brakes giving the car more comfortable and predictable handling characteristics (and the ability to actually stop).

Power comes from the original 400-cubic-inch (6.6-litre) V8, which offered 267kW and 603Nm back when Bryan Adams bought his first real six-string, but is now mated to a four-speed automatic ‘700R’ transmission with a Ford nine-inch rear differential, replacing the factory three-speed automatic item.

The black paint, white soft-top and white interior work well with the custom five-spoke alloys and red-wall tyres, to offer a timeless and classy look.

It’s not known whether Kilmer commissioned the build, but it’s fair to say the car is rightly impressive, even without Lt. Tom Kazansky’s patronage. A total of 7238 GTO convertibles were made in 1969, only 113 with the Ram-Air option and an automatic transmission. Compare that with a total of 64,851 1969 GTO coupes, and it’s a pretty rare bird.
