Barn Find Hunter Discovers Ford V8 Royalty in a Family of Car Collectors

The Barn Find Hunter episodes on Hagerty have some great adventures discovering classic cars throughout the world. Whether it’s classic Chevys and Mopars or a unique collection of Rolls-Royces, it is always a good time to try to find a few diamonds in the rough.

Hagerty has a new video on their YouTube Channel in which they interview car enthusiasts who share the stories of how they found their classic cars. This includes a Ford Mustang Fox Body fan whose family now collects a Toyota Supra with a Ford V8, a Mach 1 Ford Mustang with a Terminator Cobra supercharged engine, and many other classics.

A Family That Collects Japanese Hotrods

This video introduces us to a family that collects Japanese hotrods. The father, Brian, is an old-school Fox Body enthusiast. Brian’s plan was to restore a Ford Mustang with his son Gage after he turned 18 years old. But when Gage did become 18, he told his father he wanted a Toyota Supra.

So they bought a 1989 Toyota Supra off Craigslist for $6,000. The original owner paid $28,000 for it when it was brand new in 1989. The car has an upgraded turbo. The motor now produces 600 hp at the wheels as opposed to the 230 hp rating for a stock 1989 Toyota Supra Turbo.

Gage also has a second Supra, a 1987 model. This one has a Ford 302 cubic inch V8 motor paired with a Borg Warner T5 transmission. Another other unique feature of this Supra is that it has widebody fiberglass fenders. Gage’s plan is to add fuel injection and then use this car for drifting.

Hagerty next meets with Cameron who owns a fourth-generation Ford Mustang Mach 1. This car was bone stock when Cameron bought it. It came with a normally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 and 5-speed manual transmission.

Cameron added the engine from an SVT Terminator Cobra and upped the boost to 16 pounds. Horsepower goes up from the stock unit’s 305 to 530 hp with the new engine and mods.

Up next in the video is Zach with his 2003 Mercedes CLK 55 AMG coupe. This car came from the factory with a 5.5-liter V8 engine making 400 hp. Mercedes only made about 1,500 units of this car each year it was in production, with Zach’s car having about 153,000 miles on the odometer.

Meet A Datsun Afficianado

Datsun 240z

Hagerty then drives to Rock Hill, South Carolina to meet a man named Shaye who loves Datsuns. His first project was an S30 Datsun 240z that he has owned for 8 to 9 years. This car was a literal barn find hidden away on a farm. Shaye saw an ad for it on Craigslist from a kid selling it on behalf of his father who was also a Datsun collector.

Shaye purchased this car stock and has done all the work on it himself. This includes welding new floor pans and frame rails, changing out the interior, and adding racing seats. Shaye’s collection also includes a 1977 Datsun 810 that he found off a Facebook group dedicated to the Datsun 810 and Nissan Maxima. He paid $1,000 for it and all it needed was a new radiator.

Shaye’s affection for Datsuns has now transitioned over to Nissans. He has a Nissan 240sx that has a turbocharged inline six-cylinder motor that replaced the stock 4-banger
